DESIGN BRIEF
Olympics Live was a signature brand identity developed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The festival broadcast the Games live, to locations in similar time zones to Japan. Visitors could enjoy athlete interviews, live entertainment and have a go at Olympic sports. Additionally, sports clubs were also encouraged to host Olympics Live events to celebrate Australia’s contribution at the Games.
The brand identity’s green background consisted of manga-inspired illustrations, energetic typography and sport motifs that could be altered for subsequent Games. Added to this, the background had to include the Australian Olympic Committee’s Indigenous and Torres Strait artworks. Without complicating the design, I took segments of these artworks and placed them strategically between the background icons in a tint of green. In this way, the logo remains prominent, the Indigenous artworks of secondary importance and the background graphics as a tertiary supporting system.
Accompanying the launch of Olympics Live, MC Saatchi produced the ‘Have A Go’ campaign, to drive participation in sport. To ensure consistency between the Have a Go campaign and the Olympics Live brand identity, I designed the logo in the same type style as the campaign art. The campaign consisted of a TVC and out-of-home artwork which fortunately included some animated icons resembling the illustrations used in the Live brand identity.
